Conceived in the 1830’s as an attempt to create a ‘tourist quarter’ and capitalise on cross-channel traffic stopping over in the town, Waterloo Crescent was built on a former shingle spit diving Dover’s domestic harbour and the mouth of the river Dour from the open water. Beginning on the orders of the Port Commissioner and retained as part of the Port’s wider estate beyond the Docks, these buildings have suffered from decades of alterations and unsympathetic repairs compromising their integrity and built fabric.
The Port has embarked on a wide-ranging programme of conservation and repair as part of the wider vision for Dover seafront, and HMY have been involved in a number of projects, providing design services and preparing documentary submissions for Planning and Listed Building approvals, detail design and on-site technical and design consultancy as works progress, as well as liaison with the Local Authority Heritage Officers.
At Waterloo Mansions we provide technical design package, site inspection and support services. The refurbishment required significant consultation with the the Local Authority Conservation Officer to agree which elements of the fabric could be retained or renewed, being mindful of the buildings exposure to the English Channel and ongoing maintenance.
