A New Medical School at the University of Kent

Overview

HMY was appointed to design a building for the new Kent & Medway Medical School, a joint collaboration between University of Kent and Canterbury Christ Church University. KMMS will be the county’s first ever medical school, bringing together existing centres of excellence in health and medical education at the two universities, along with local healthcare organisations, to offer a new model of patient-focused medical education. The medical school will play an essential part in the recruitment and retention of medical professionals in the region.

The building contains a mix of traditional teaching spaces (lecture theatre, seminar rooms etc) and specialist medical training facilities such as a GP suite and flexibly designed spaces to accommodate specific medical exams. Working with Willmott Dixon under SCAPE procurement, the delivery of the project from feasibility stage took just 22 months to be completed. It was constructed using an off-site manufacturing system with Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) panels.

The separate specialist practical teaching facilities will be located at Canterbury Christ Church University campus in a new £60M Science, Technology, Health, Engineering and Medicine Building. HMY are working in collaboration with Hamilton Architects of Northern Ireland on this landmark project as part of the Kent & Medway Medical School.
