Hyper Acute Stroke Unit, Maidstone Hospital

Overview

HMY has been working with Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust to develop a new Hyper-Acute Stroke Unit (HASU) at Maidstone Hospital. It will be one of three specialist HASUs in Kent and Medway.
The Trust’s Stroke Unit currently treats around 1,000 stroke patients every year. Accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the aim of the Hyper-Acute Stroke Units is to consolidate the existing stroke resources across the region in order to meet national best practice standards. This will mean that everyone treated for stroke in Kent and Medway will get consistently high-quality care, regardless of where they live in the region, or what time of the day or night their stroke occurs.

The project includes a full refurbishment of the wards, single bedrooms, support facilities and gym, as well as a new day room and nurses’ stations. A new external plant area was installed to provide a new, compliant ventilation system to all the refurbished spaces, as well as replacing all the electrics, medical gases, IT and call systems.
