The Corn Exchange is a large Grade I Listed Building in the centre of Rochester. The original part of the building is the High Street facade which was constructed in 1706 by Sir Cloudsley Shovell. The main section of the building is the imposing 19 Century structure by Flockton & Abbott, which faces onto Northgate and which contains the principal public spaces.
The building was extensively refurbished in 1995 with HMY as Architect. Since that date little or no works have been carried out apart from some isolated floor covering replacement and minor redecorations. HMY were appointed by Medway Council to provide interior design services working alongside the Corn Exchange manager to create a more contemporary environment to make it more welcoming and attractive to let for weddings and events.
Phase I has included improvements to entrance hall, toilets, bar, Princes Hall and Queens Hall decorations. This upgrade to the finishes and fittings by our interior designer has demonstrated that the original design concept has been sound and the ability to update with simple paint finishes and fabrics can be accommodated without impacting upon the architectural significance of the building or its key details.
